Mr.Dev – Editor

Mr.Dev builds games, and builds the places people play them. Poki Games Online is one of those places: he runs it end to end, from the code the pages are served with to the sentence under each thumbnail.

What he does here

Three jobs, and they are the whole job:

• Deciding what gets in. The licensed catalogue is far larger than this library. Titles with gambling or casino mechanics, real-money wagering, adult content, or anything that will not load over HTTPS are filtered out before they reach a page.
• Checking that a game is what its page claims. A description that promises a mechanic the game does not have is worse than no description. The claim gets cut.
• Writing and editing the text. Drafts are produced from the studio’s own data and then read against the game itself. Nothing is published carrying the syndicated marketing blurb every other portal runs.

Why a developer runs a games portal

Making browser games and cataloguing them turn out to draw on the same knowledge. Knowing how an HTML5 build is packaged explains why one title takes eight seconds to start and another is instant. Knowing how input handling is wired explains which games will survive a touchscreen and which were only ever built for a keyboard. That is the difference between a list of games and a library someone has thought about.
